History

Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church of Easton, Pennsylvania has served the Greek Orthodox faithful of the Lehigh Valley and the greater Easton area from its home at 20th and Hay Terrace in the city of Easton. The parish is dedicated to the Evangelismos, the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the great feast of March 25 on which the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would bear the Son of God, a feast that also carries the significance of Greek Independence Day, uniting the sacred and the national in a single celebration cherished throughout the Greek Orthodox world.

 

The Easton Greek community established its parish to serve the Orthodox faithful of Northampton and Warren Counties, a region of the Delaware Valley where Greek immigrants had settled alongside the many other nationalities that the industrial and commercial opportunities of the Lehigh Valley attracted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Among the clergy who served Evangelismos through its history was the Reverend Nomikos Michael Vaporis, who would go on to a distinguished academic career as a professor and dean at Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and editor of the Greek Orthodox Theological Review, leaving the Easton community a distinguished legacy in the broader institutional life of American Orthodoxy.
