History

Saint Matthew Greek Orthodox Church of Blandon, Pennsylvania is a relatively young parish, incorporated in 2009, established to bring the ancient Orthodox Christian faith to the communities of Berks County in eastern Pennsylvania. Located on the Allentown Pike in Blandon, the parish serves an area of Pennsylvania that had previously been without its own Greek Orthodox community, with the faithful of the region making the longer journey to the established parishes in Reading and the Lehigh Valley.

The parish is dedicated to Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, one of the twelve Apostles of Christ and the author of the first Gospel, a tax collector who left everything to follow the Lord and who brought the Good News of the Kingdom to the Jewish community and beyond. His feast day is celebrated on November 16. The parish takes as its motto the Great Commission from the final verses of Saint Matthew's Gospel, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, a charge that the community takes seriously in its openness to all who seek Christ regardless of background or ethnicity.

From its founding, Saint Matthew has embraced a deliberately welcoming, outward-facing identity as an Orthodox Christian community open to all who seek Christ, conducting services in a manner that draws together people of many backgrounds around the ancient liturgical tradition of the Eastern Church. The parish community is described by its own members as a place where people of all backgrounds are integrated into the healing embrace of the Church, children are fully part of the community, and the profound challenge of the transforming Gospel is proclaimed from the pulpit each Sunday.
