History
The founders of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Ambridge, Pennsylvania arrived in America with few material possessions but carried with them something no ocean crossing could diminish: their faith in Jesus Christ and their love of the Holy Orthodox Church. On October 8, 1916, drawing strength from that faith, they established the Holy Trinity parish of Ambridge. Initial services were conducted in the Russian Church hall with Father Germanos. Within three years the community had built a proper church building at 300 Maplewood Avenue, and in 1919 the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Ambridge was consecrated by the Most Reverend Archbishop of Rodostolou Alexander. The first Board of Trustees included Vasilios Anastasopoulos as president, Constantine Pournaras as vice president, Nicholas Skangos as secretary, and Vasilios Tsacalis as treasurer, along with Constantine Papaspyliotopoulos, Emmanuel Falieras, John Skourkos, Vasilios Foukas, Sophocles Chrysides, George Karbounis, George Anastasiou, and Gregory Lampros.
The original 1919 church seated 135 people. As decades passed and the parish grew, it became clear that a new building was needed. In March 1974, the General Assembly gave approval for a new church, and in April 1977 a three-year Building Fund Pledge Program was launched to finance it. A building committee of fifteen members worked with architect James Pappas to design a sanctuary that would seat nearly 400. Groundbreaking took place on May 29, 1978, with Bishop Anthimos as celebrant, who placed the Holy Icon of the Holy Trinity on the site of the new church. The moment was so moving that tears filled the eyes of young and old alike, from the oldest parishioner Louis Nellas to fifteen-month-old Valerie Sickles. On October 19, 1979, exactly sixty years after the original church had opened, Holy Trinity parish moved to its new location on Beaver Road, with Bishop Maximos of Pittsburgh and Metropolitan Barnabos of Greece officiating at the Thyranoixia. The first Divine Liturgy in the new building was celebrated on October 21, 1979. The church was formally consecrated in June 1984.
