History

Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church of East Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known by its Greek name Ypapanti, is one of the oldest and most distinctive Greek Orthodox parishes in the Pittsburgh region. The parish was established in 1915 in the community that grew up around the original George Westinghouse plant, a town shaped by industry and the waves of immigrant workers who came to build their lives alongside its factories and foundries. Among them were Greek Orthodox faithful who gathered to preserve their ancient faith in their new homeland.

What sets Ypapanti apart from every other parish in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is its name. It is the only parish in the entire Archdiocese dedicated to the Presentation of Christ, known in Greek as Ypapanti, and it is the only one that celebrates its feast day on February 2nd. That feast commemorates the moment forty days after the Nativity when the Virgin Mary brought the infant Christ to the Temple in Jerusalem, an event that is mirrored in the Orthodox tradition each time a new mother brings her infant to the church forty days after birth to receive the blessing of the Lord. The name was not merely chosen but lived out in the life of the community.

The parish also holds another distinction among the churches of the greater Pittsburgh region: it is the only one that was built as a Greek Orthodox Church and has remained on the same site on Electric Avenue without interruption for its entire existence, serving the faithful of East Pittsburgh for over 110 years from the very ground on which it was first established.

Today, Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox Church continues its ministry at 1672 Electric Avenue under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Fr. Michael Kallaur, as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh. Its services are conducted in both English and Greek, welcoming parishioners and newcomers of all backgrounds into a community devoted to worship, fellowship, and service, carrying forward more than a century of unbroken Orthodox Christian life in East Pittsburgh.
