History

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Lorain, Ohio was established in 1923 by the pioneer Greek settlers who had made this Lake Erie city their home. Located some thirty miles west of Cleveland, Lorain had drawn Greek immigrants primarily from Thebes in central Greece and from Corinth in the Peloponnese, with additional arrivals from northern Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek islands. The great industrial engine that pulled them to Lorain was the U.S. Steel mill, which had begun operating in 1895 and stretched for nearly three miles along the lakeshore, employing thousands of local residents in one of the largest steel operations in Ohio.

The first priest of record, according to a parish history by Nicholas Barbaresso, was Father George Dougekos, who held services in various storerooms in South Lorain and later at the YMCA while the young community worked to build something of its own. The committee formed for this purpose raised $3,500, purchased two lots in central Lorain for $2,000, and borrowed $10,000 for a mortgage, turning those modest resources into the church building that gave the community its permanent home. A Greek School was established to pass the language and heritage of the homeland to the next generation. In 1931 the Greek American Ladies Club was founded, reorganizing in 1934 as the parish's Philoptochos chapter, the women's charitable society that has sustained the parish's outreach ever since.

In October 2023 the parish celebrated its centennial with a weekend of festivities honoring a hundred years of Greek and Greek-American heritage centered around the cornerstone of the church and the fellowship of the community it has sustained across four generations of Lorain County life.

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 2000 Tower Boulevard in Lorain serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Lorain County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the largest Orthodox Christian community in a city whose diverse immigrant heritage made it one of northeastern Ohio's most storied industrial centers.
