History

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of New Castle, Pennsylvania has served the Lawrence County Greek community since its charter in 1919. The parish's naming carries a story of its own: at the first General Assembly, the founders agreed that the church should bear the name of the saint most predominant among those gathered. The Georges prevailed, and the community was named Saint George.

The first home of the parish was a modest building that served the young congregation through the 1920s. In 1928 it was sold and the former Grace Methodist Episcopal Church at 215 East Reynolds Street in downtown New Castle was purchased. Renovations were undertaken, and on Sunday, May 10, 1931, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Athenagoras, who would later become the 268th Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The parish grew, matured, and flourished on Reynolds Street for five decades, becoming an active and contributing member of the New Castle community.

By the 1980s the parish was ready for a new chapter. The community relocated to 315 West Englewood Avenue, and the new church was formally consecrated in 1986, marking a new era in the life of the Saint George community. The Ladies Philoptochos Society, active since the parish's earliest years, played a key role in furnishing and supporting the new facilities, continuing a tradition of service and generosity that has characterized the women of Saint George throughout the parish's history.

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 315 West Englewood Avenue in New Castle serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Lawrence County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community that has carried the faith of its Greek immigrant founders across more than a century of life in western Pennsylvania.
