History

Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania has served the Orthodox Christian faithful of the Kiski Valley since the early twentieth century, established by Greek immigrants who had made their way to this planned steel town on the Kiskiminetas River in Armstrong County. Vandergrift, conceived by Frederick Law Olmsted and built by Apollo Iron and Steel Company in the 1890s as a model industrial town, drew workers from many nationalities, and among those who settled there were Greek immigrants who sought to preserve their faith and community in their new home in western Pennsylvania.

 

The parish is dedicated to two of the most significant figures in the history of Christianity, Constantine the Great, the Roman emperor whose Edict of Milan established religious tolerance throughout the empire in 313, and his mother Saint Helena, venerated for her pilgrimage to Jerusalem and her discovery of the True Cross. Together they are celebrated each year on May 21 as Equal to the Apostles, their dedication giving the Vandergrift community its patronal feast and connecting it to one of the oldest and most widely observed commemorations in the Orthodox calendar.
