History

On March 21, 1931, a dedicated group of Greek immigrants in Massillon, Ohio conceived a dream of establishing a Greek Orthodox church in their city. For twenty years that dream was nurtured, sustained by the faith and determination of a small community that kept the vision alive through the hardships of the Great Depression and the upheaval of World War II. On Palm Sunday, April 22, 1951, the dream was realized when the first service was held in the newly built Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 364 First Street S.E., giving the Massillon Greek community a permanent spiritual home after two decades of patient perseverance.

The parish was shaped profoundly by the ministry of Father Constantine Shiepis, who arrived in 1960 and served Saint George for forty-five years, one of the longest tenures of any priest in the Metropolis of Pittsburgh. Under his guidance the church underwent its first remodeling in 1961, expanding the sanctuary, adding stained glass windows, erecting a new belfry, and enriching the interior with new furnishings and iconography. On January 27, 1985, the city of Massillon honored Father Shiepis with a proclamation by Mayor Delbert Demmer designating a day in his name, a mark of the deep affection the broader Massillon community held for him.
