History

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Portland, Maine was founded in 1908 by Greek immigrants who had made their way to the port city, establishing the first Greek Orthodox community in the state. The early community grew steadily through the first decades of the twentieth century, and by 1925 had reached a size that the State of Maine officially recognized the Greek parishes of Portland and Westbrook as formal religious bodies.

Shortly after that recognition, the parish community acquired one of Portland's most historic church buildings: the old Presbyterian Church on the corner of Pleasant and Park Streets, originally constructed by the Methodists in 1828. The building is the second-oldest existing house of worship in Portland, and its steeple housed one of only thirteen Liberty Bells ever cast by the Paul Revere Foundry, a distinction that gives the building a place in American history as well as in the history of the Maine Greek community. The parish transformed the interior with hand-crafted stained glass windows and beautiful Byzantine Orthodox icons, creating a sanctuary whose visual richness draws visitors year after year.

The annual Greek Festival, which in 2026 celebrated its forty-second year, has become one of the most beloved cultural events in greater Portland, drawing thousands of visitors each summer for Greek food, music, and the warmth of Hellenic hospitality in the heart of the Old Port.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 133 Pleasant Street in Portland serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of greater Portland and the surrounding communities as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a multi-ethnic community steeped in tradition and serving the Orthodox faithful of the Pine Tree State.
