History
The Maui Orthodox Christian Mission was founded in 2012, established with the original faithful guidance of Father Theodore, who served as President of the Commission on Orthodox Missions and Evangelism, and Presvytera Stacey, alongside Father Alexander Leong, who has served the mission from 2013 to the present from his home parish of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church on the neighboring island of Oahu.
The mission carries a unique calling. As the only Orthodox Christian community on the island of Maui, it occupies a singular position at the nexus of vibrant Eastern Orthodox jurisdictions spanning both the Americas and Asia, a small Pan-Orthodox community gathering together Christians of many traditions who share a commitment to the ancient liturgical life of the Church as practiced over millennia by the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Matins and Divine Liturgy have been served once a month on Maui, with the faithful and visitors gathering at the borrowed space of Saint Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Kihei, a gesture of ecumenical hospitality that has sustained the mission's worship life since its founding.
Following each service, the community gathers for an Aloha fellowship hour, sharing traditional Greek treats like finikia, koulourakia, and kourambiethes alongside the warmth of island hospitality, welcoming newcomers, visitors, and residents of any denomination and background into the fellowship of the Orthodox Christian faith.
The Maui Orthodox Christian Mission, gathering at 25 West Lipoa Street in Kihei, serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Maui as a mission parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
