History

Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Concord, California traces its origins to the growth of the Greek Orthodox community in Contra Costa County, as families settled in the communities east of the San Francisco Bay and recognized the need for an Orthodox parish closer to home. The young community worshipped and gathered for many years in a renovated home that served as both sanctuary and community center, a common arrangement for small Orthodox communities building toward something permanent.

In 1994 the construction of the current church building at 1955 Kirker Pass Road was completed, giving the Concord community the permanent home it had worked toward. The building was designed on a rotunda floor plan, one of the most ancient Orthodox church architectural forms, its large overarching dome covering the entirety of the circular interior. The design drew its inspiration from the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, the great Church of the Holy Wisdom built in the sixth century and one of the architectural wonders of the ancient world. Ancient Byzantine iconography adorns the interior walls of the church's Solea, and a traditional Romanian icon screen of intricately hand-carved designs stands before the altar, giving the sanctuary a richness drawn from the full breadth of the Orthodox tradition. In the year 2000 the Saint Dionysios Greek Orthodox Church of Pittsburg merged with Saint Demetrios, uniting the Greek Orthodox faithful of the eastern Contra Costa County area under a single parish family.

Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 1955 Kirker Pass Road in Concord serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of Contra Costa County as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a welcoming community rooted in Orthodox tradition and committed to worship, education, and the celebration of faith, community, and Hellenic heritage in the East Bay.
