History
Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California began its journey in 1978 and 1979, when Greek Orthodox families in north San Diego County started gathering for worship without a church of their own. Each Sunday, Divine Liturgies, baptisms, and weddings were held in the cafeteria of a junior high school in nearby Solana Beach, with Sunday School classes taking place in the adjoining classrooms, an arrangement that sustained the new community as it worked toward a permanent home.
With the Lord's assistance the parish pressed steadily toward its vision. The community purchased and developed a five-acre piece of land in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and through sustained effort and sacrifice constructed a Senior Center that served as an interim church for fourteen years while the parish continued to grow. Along the way the parish added thirty housing units for senior citizens and purchased three additional acres for future development, demonstrating a commitment to serving the broader community alongside its own spiritual mission.
The culmination of those years of patient building came with the construction of the permanent church and its community facilities at 3459 Manchester Avenue. The completed church is known throughout north San Diego County as the Church with the Shining Cross, a name inspired by an unplanned reflection of light on the church's gold dome in the form of a cross, which the community has taken as a sign that this church was meant to be. The annual Cardiff Greek Festival, launched in 1978, has grown into one of the most beloved cultural events in the North County.
