History
Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Camarillo, California was founded in 1970 as the Greek Orthodox Church of Ventura County, bringing Orthodox Christian worship to a part of Southern California that had none. The community's origins lie in the persistence of a small group of faithful who had made several unsuccessful attempts to organize before 1967, when His Grace Bishop Meletios granted permission to begin gathering signatures, requiring a minimum of fifty to proceed. His Grace suggested the name Ventura County Greek Orthodox Congregation, and the effort moved forward from there.
The parish's history unfolded in three milestones. The first was the gathering of the founding community and the long years of organizing and fundraising that followed. The second came on October 23, 1977, when the doors of the parish's first permanent worship space opened at the Camarillo Airport. The community had purchased the nondenominational chapel of the former Oxnard Air Force Base and converted it into a Byzantine church, giving the faithful of Ventura County their first dedicated house of Orthodox Christian worship. The name of the church had not yet been formally decided, and four competing committees each championed a different patron saint: Saint Demetrios, Saint Andrew, Saints Constantine and Helen, and Holy Cross. Fundraising votes were held, and in November 1980 Bishop Anthony announced at a grand celebration dinner that Saint Demetrios had prevailed.
The third milestone came on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2015, when the doors of the Agape Chapel at the parish's present location at 5575 Santa Rosa Road were opened with a Thyranoixia service presided over by Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco. The parish has since continued to grow, expanding from its Greek immigrant origins into a diverse community of approximately 200 families representing at least twelve different nationalities, all worshipping together in the ancient Orthodox Christian tradition.
