History
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of San Jose, California traces its founding to 1945, when Greek immigrants in the Santa Clara Valley came together to establish a parish to serve their growing community in the South Bay. Just five years later, in 1950, the young community completed construction of its church, giving the parish a permanent home and a place around which the social and spiritual life of San Jose's Greek families could revolve.
The community that built the parish and its church went on to leave a lasting mark on the cultural life of the South Bay. In 1969, members of Saint Nicholas hosted the inaugural San Jose Greek Festival, an event that grew over the following decades into one of the most celebrated annual Greek cultural festivals in Northern California, drawing visitors from across the Bay Area for food, music, and dance.
Through the second half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, Saint Nicholas grew into the cornerstone of Orthodox Christian life in the South Bay, serving not only Greek Americans but Cypriot Americans, immigrants, and expatriates who found in the parish both a spiritual home and a connection to Hellenic heritage in the heart of Silicon Valley.
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 1260 Davis Street in San Jose serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the South Bay and Silicon Valley as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a community celebrating eight decades of faith, fellowship, and Hellenic culture.
