History

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church of Flagstaff, Arizona stands as the only Orthodox Christian and Hellenic cultural presence in northern Arizona, bringing the ancient liturgical tradition of the Eastern Church to a region known for its ponderosa pine forests, the San Francisco Peaks, and the nearby Grand Canyon. The parish serves a geographically vast area of the Colorado Plateau where no other Orthodox community exists within many miles.

The community worshipped for years without a permanent location of its own, a common challenge for small Orthodox mission parishes in the American West where the faithful are dispersed across wide territories. In October 2016 a permanent home was established at 6134 Black Bill Road in Flagstaff, giving the Orthodox faithful of northern Arizona a dedicated place of worship for the first time and marking a significant milestone in the community's growth and stability. The parish follows the typikon, or cycle of services and liturgical practices, of the Great Church of Christ in Constantinople, founded by the Holy Apostle Andrew, maintaining a connection to the ancient liturgical heart of the Orthodox world in the high desert of Arizona.

The community gathers each Sunday for Orthros and Divine Liturgy and celebrates feast days throughout the liturgical year, welcoming Orthodox Christians of all backgrounds as well as visitors and inquirers who come seeking the ancient Christian faith that the parish proclaims and preserves in northern Arizona.

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church at 6134 Black Bill Road in Flagstaff serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of northern Arizona as a mission parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
