History

The Nativity-Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of Cohasset, Massachusetts occupies one of the most charming and historically layered religious buildings on the South Shore, a Richardsonian Romanesque structure set along the shores of Straits Pond, where parishioners worship within sight of swans drifting peacefully across the water and, in summer months, catch the salt breeze through open windows.

The building itself predates the Greek Orthodox community by eight decades. In 1900 it was erected as the Pope Memorial Church, built by Colonel Albert A. and Abby Pope as a private shrine in memory of their son Charles Linder Pope, who drowned nearby at the age of seventeen. Its architectural beauty and intimate scale attracted several Christian denominations over the following eight decades, each community finding in the building a fitting home for worship and reflection. In 1980 the Greek Orthodox faithful of the South Shore acquired the building, transforming it into what has since been known with deep affection as Panagia Church, the Church of the All-Holy One, after the beloved title of the Virgin Mary in the Orthodox tradition.

The parish's dual dedication to the Nativity of the Theotokos, celebrated September 8, and the Dormition of the Theotokos, celebrated August 15, places it under the patronage of the two great Marian feasts that bookend the Orthodox liturgical year, connecting the Cohasset community to two of the most ancient and beloved celebrations of the Eastern Christian calendar.

The Nativity-Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church at 811 Jerusalem Road in Cohasset serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the South Shore as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, its Panagia Church one of the most picturesquely situated Orthodox houses of worship in New England.
