History
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Lexington, Massachusetts was founded by Greek immigrants who, as their numbers grew in the area, consolidated their meager savings and purchased a wooden structure that they remodeled into a house of worship. Ten years later the community observed its first formal religious service together and was incorporated and chartered by the city, marking the official beginning of parish life.
As the parish continued to expand, the original small building became inadequate for the growing congregation, and land was purchased for the construction of a new church. The new church was built and dedicated, and it remains the parish's house of worship to this day. A school building consisting of four classrooms was erected adjacent to the church to serve the religious and cultural instruction of the community's children, carrying forward the work of passing the Greek Orthodox faith and Hellenic heritage to the next generation.
Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 17 Meriam Street in Lexington serves the Orthodox Christian faithful of the western suburbs of Boston as a parish of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston within the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, a close-knit community of fewer than 200 families that has grown steadily since its founding more than fifty years ago.
