History

Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Rutland, Vermont holds the distinction of being the only Greek Orthodox parish in the State of Vermont, serving as the sole center of Greek Orthodox community life in a state where Orthodox Christianity has always been a minority presence. Located at 10 Cottage Street in downtown Rutland, the parish has brought the ancient liturgical and sacramental tradition of the Eastern Church to the Green Mountain State for decades, gathering the faithful of Vermont and the surrounding region around the Eucharistic life of the Orthodox Church.

The parish is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the beloved fourth-century Archbishop and wonderworker whose feast day on December 6 is celebrated throughout the Orthodox world and whose reputation for generosity, mercy toward the poor, and intercession for the unjustly accused has made him one of the most universally venerated saints in Christendom. The dedication connects the Rutland community to one of the deepest currents of Greek Orthodox devotion across the ages.
