History

Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church of New London, Connecticut was founded in 1939 by Greek immigrants whose faith, love, vision, and sacrificial generosity set the parish's distinctive ministry into motion for generations to come. The church occupies a place of particular historical significance within New London itself, situated in the historic Winthrop Square area of the city, the very spot where the first Christian congregation in New London gathered to worship and where the city itself was founded in 1649, a layering of Christian history that gives the parish its unique sense of place in the oldest parts of one of Connecticut's oldest cities.

 

Over the decades since its founding, Saint Sophia has grown steadily through the faithful stewardship of successive generations of parishioners, welcoming both cradle Orthodox Christians and converts to Orthodoxy into its family. The parish has built a full community life of worship, Greek School and Sunday School for youth, Philoptochos charitable ministry, a senior group, a choir, and Studies in the Faith for adults, sustaining a parish of more than 350 families drawn from throughout New London County and beyond.
