How Do I Get My Greek Tax Number After Getting Greek Citizenship?

Getting your Greek tax number, known as the AFM, is one of the first practical steps after obtaining Greek citizenship. The good news is that it is a relatively straightforward process, it can be done remotely without traveling to Greece, and it does not even require Greek citizenship to obtain one. Anyone can get an AFM regardless of citizenship, residency, or financial connection to Greece.

What Is the AFM?

The AFM is a unique tax identification number in Greece consisting of nine digits, issued once and valid for life. It is required for virtually every financial and legal transaction in Greece, including buying or inheriting property, opening a Greek bank account, registering a vehicle, paying taxes, and accessing the TAXISnet online tax platform. Without it, engaging with the Greek administrative and financial system is nearly impossible.

You Do Not Need Citizenship to Get One

This is one of the most important things to understand about the AFM. Citizenship and place of residence do not matter. Even if you do not permanently reside in Greece and do not have a residence permit, you can obtain an AFM as a non-resident. If you own Greek property, are managing an inheritance, or simply want to get ahead of your Greek administrative obligations, you can get your AFM at any point, even before your citizenship case is complete.

How to Apply From Abroad

You do not need to travel to Greece to get your AFM. The process can now be completed remotely, with identification via video call, without the need to visit the local tax office. The application is submitted through the Greek tax authority known as AADE, and identification is completed online. Alternatively, you can appoint a tax representative in Greece who holds a power of attorney on your behalf and handles the entire process without requiring you to be present.

What Documents You Need

To apply for your AFM you will generally need a copy of your valid passport, your full name and parents' names, your home address abroad, your foreign tax identification number, and a contact phone number. Greek bureaucracy is strict, and any missing or incorrect paperwork can delay your application. Making sure all information is consistent across your documents before submitting avoids the most common source of delays.

The TAXISnet Platform

Alongside your AFM, you will also receive an Authentication Key known as the Kleidarithmos. This key allows you to log into TAXISnet, the Greek online tax services platform, where you can file taxes, view documents, and manage your financial affairs with the Greek state. TAXISnet is entirely in Greek, which can be challenging for diaspora Greeks who are not fluent. Having a tax representative manage this platform on your behalf removes that barrier entirely.
