Abatzis Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Abatzis (Αμπατζής) is an occupational surname derived from aba, a coarse woolen cloth, and the occupational suffix -tzis (-τζής), both transmitted through Ottoman Turkish. An abatzis was traditionally a maker, merchant, or dealer in aba cloth and garments manufactured from it. The occupation was widespread in Ottoman Balkan commercial centers. Abatzis therefore preserves a particularly clear ancestral connection with the textile and clothing trade.
