Chatzigiakoumis Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Chatzigiakoumis (Χατζηγιακούμης) is a compound surname formed from Chatzi-/Hatzi- (Χατζη-), a title historically associated with completing a religious pilgrimage, and Giakoumis (Γιακούμης), a traditional Greek form related to Iakovos (Ιάκωβος), or Jacob. Among Orthodox Christians, Chatzi- was especially associated with pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Chatzigiakoumis therefore essentially means “Giakoumis the pilgrim.” The honorific and personal name became fused into a family identifier that subsequently passed hereditarily to the pilgrim's descendants.
