Deliyannis Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Deliyannis (Δεληγιάννης) is a compound surname formed from deli-, from Ottoman Turkish deli, meaning “mad,” “wild,” “daring,” or “fearless,” and Giannis (Γιάννης), the familiar form of Ioannis (Ιωάννης). In Ottoman-era nickname usage, deli could carry a positive sense of boldness or exceptional bravery rather than simply insanity. Deliyannis therefore originally meant approximately “Daring Giannis” or “Wild Giannis,” distinguishing an ancestor named Giannis by his temperament or reputation. The compound personal nickname subsequently became fixed and passed to his descendants as a hereditary surname.
