Hadjimanolis Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Hadjimanolis (Χατζημανώλης) is a compound surname formed from Chatzi-/Hatzi- (Χατζη-), a title historically associated with completing a religious pilgrimage, and Manolis (Μανώλης), the familiar Greek form of Emmanouil (Εμμανουήλ). Among Orthodox Christians, Chatzi- was particularly associated with pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Hadjimanolis therefore essentially means “Manolis the pilgrim.” The honorific distinguished an ancestor named Manolis within his community and eventually fused with his personal name, becoming the hereditary surname passed to his descendants.
