Hadjistratis Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Hadjistratis (Χατζηστρατής) is a compound surname formed from Chatzi-/Hatzi- (Χατζη-), the traditional title associated with completing a religious pilgrimage, and Stratis (Στρατής), a common familiar form of Efstratios (Ευστράτιος). Among Orthodox Christians, Chatzi- was particularly associated with pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Hadjistratis therefore essentially means “Stratis the pilgrim.” The honorific distinguished an ancestor named Stratis who had completed such a pilgrimage, and the combined designation subsequently became attached to his household and passed hereditarily to his descendants.
