Karagiorgou Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Karagiorgou (Καραγιώργου) is the genitive or feminine form of Karagiorgos (Καραγιώργος), a compound surname formed from kara-, from Ottoman Turkish kara, meaning “black” or “dark,” and Giorgos (Γιώργος), the familiar form of Georgios (Γεώργιος). Karagiorgos therefore originally meant approximately “dark Giorgos,” likely distinguishing an ancestor by dark hair, complexion, beard, or another characteristic. Kara- was extremely productive in Ottoman-era Greek nickname formation. Karagiorgou subsequently became established as the corresponding feminine or family form of the hereditary surname.
