Karanikos Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Karanikos (Καρανίκος) is a compound surname beginning with kara-, from Ottoman Turkish kara, meaning “black” or “dark,” followed by Nikos (Νίκος), the familiar form of Nikolaos (Νικόλαος). It therefore most likely originated as “dark Nikos,” distinguishing a dark-haired, dark-bearded, or dark-complexioned Nikolaos from others sharing the common personal name. Nikolaos derives from nike (νίκη), “victory,” and laos (λαός), “people.” Karanikos subsequently became hereditary after the ancestral descriptive nickname became attached to the family.
