Papastamatiou Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Papastamatiou (Παπασταματίου) is a compound surname formed from papa- (παπα-), meaning “priest,” and Stamatiou, the genitive of Stamatis (Σταμάτης). It therefore essentially means “of Papa-Stamatis” or “descendant of Father Stamatis.” Stamatis derives from stamato (σταματώ), meaning “to stop,” and historically functioned as a protective personal name expressing the wish that repeated family misfortune or infant mortality would stop. Greek Orthodox parish priests may marry before ordination and have children, so surnames identifying descent from a priest are widespread throughout Greece.
