Sgourakis Surname Meaning

The Greek surname Sgourakis (Σγουράκης) derives from sgouros (σγουρός), meaning “curly” or “curly-haired,” combined with the suffix -akis (-άκης), particularly characteristic of Crete and southern Greece. It is therefore a classic appearance-based surname. An ancestor with conspicuously curly hair could have been known as Sgouros or Sgouris, with Sgourakis developing as a diminutive or descendant form. Physical features were among the most common ways of distinguishing people within traditional communities. The nickname subsequently became detached from the actual appearance of later generations and survived as a hereditary surname.
