St. Antipas of Pergamum Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Antipas of Pergamum is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the early Christian martyrs and a bishop who remained faithful to Christ during a time of persecution in the Roman Empire. His feast day is celebrated on April 11, and on this day people named Antipas and Antipa celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Antipas

St. Antipas lived during the 1st century and served as Bishop of Pergamum, an important early Christian community in Asia Minor. According to Christian tradition, he was a disciple of St. John the Theologian.

Pergamum was known as a major center of pagan worship, which made the spread of Christianity especially difficult.

Early Christian Leader

As bishop, St. Antipas guided the Christian community and preached the teachings of Christ despite the strong pagan presence in the region. His leadership helped strengthen the faith of early Christians living under difficult conditions.

His devotion and courage earned him great respect among the faithful.

Martyrdom

Because he refused to abandon Christianity, St. Antipas was eventually arrested by Roman authorities. According to Christian tradition, he was martyred for his faith in Pergamum.

His martyrdom made him one of the early Christian saints remembered by the Orthodox Church.

Greek Name Day for Antipas

Because St. Antipas of Pergamum is commemorated on April 11, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Antipas

Antipa

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
