St. George the Great Martyr Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. George the Great Martyr is one of the most widely honored saints in the Orthodox Christian Church and is remembered for his courage, faith, and martyrdom during the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire. His feast day is celebrated on April 23, and on this day people named Georgios, George, Giorgos, Yorgos, Georgia, and Georgina, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. George

St. George lived during the 3rd century and served as a soldier in the Roman army under Emperor Diocletian. Although he held a respected position in the military, he was also a devoted Christian.

At the time, Christians were being persecuted throughout the Roman Empire, and many were pressured to renounce their faith.

Defender of the Christian Faith

St. George openly declared his Christian faith and refused to participate in the persecution of other Christians. Because of this, he was arrested and ordered to renounce his belief in Christ.

Despite torture and pressure from Roman authorities, George remained steadfast in his faith.

Martyrdom and Legacy

St. George was eventually executed for refusing to abandon Christianity. His courage made him one of the most celebrated martyrs in Christian history.

Over time, his story spread across the Christian world, and he became one of the most beloved saints in both Eastern and Western Christianity.

Greek Name Day for George

Because St. George the Great Martyr is commemorated on April 23, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Georgios

Giorgos

Yorgos

George

Georgia

Georgina

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.

When St. George Is Celebrated

The feast day of St. George the Great Martyr is observed each year on April 23 in the Greek Orthodox Church. Churches across Greece and the Orthodox world hold special services honoring his life, courage, and devotion to the Christian faith.
