St Justin the Philosopher and Martyr

St. Justin the Philosopher and Martyr Feast Day and Greek Name Day
St. Justin the Philosopher and Martyr is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as one of the earliest Christian philosophers and defenders of the faith. His feast day is celebrated on June 1, and on this day people named Justin, Justinos, Justina, Justine, and Tina, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.
Who Was St. Justin
St. Justin was born in the early 2nd century in Flavia Neapolis, near present day Nablus in the region of Samaria. He grew up studying various schools of Greek philosophy, including Stoicism, Aristotelian philosophy, and Platonism.
Despite his deep philosophical education, he continued searching for truth and meaning until he eventually encountered the teachings of Christianity.
A Philosopher Who Embraced Christianity
After studying the Christian faith, Justin became convinced that Christianity represented the true fulfillment of philosophy. He devoted his life to teaching and explaining the Christian faith using the language of Greek philosophy.
Because of this, he became known as Justin the Philosopher.
He wrote several important works defending Christianity, including the famous First Apology and Second Apology, which explained Christian beliefs to Roman authorities and intellectual audiences.
Martyrdom in Rome
St. Justin eventually traveled to Rome, where he continued teaching about Christianity. His teachings attracted both followers and opposition.
He was eventually arrested and brought before Roman authorities. When ordered to sacrifice to the pagan gods, he refused.
Because of his refusal to renounce Christianity, he was executed around 165 AD, becoming known as Justin the Martyr.
