St. Thallelaios the Martyr Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Thallelaios the Martyr is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as a Christian physician and martyr who remained faithful to Christ during a time of persecution in the Roman Empire. His feast day is celebrated on May 20, and on this day people named Thallelaios and Thallelaia, among other variations, celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Thallelaios

St. Thallelaios lived during the 3rd century and was known as a physician who practiced medicine while also sharing the Christian faith.

He lived in the region of Lebanon and Syria, where he became known for helping the sick and offering care to those in need.

Faith and Persecution

During a period of persecution against Christians, St. Thallelaios was arrested by Roman authorities for openly practicing Christianity.

Despite being pressured to abandon his faith, he refused and continued to proclaim his belief in Christ.

Martyrdom

Because of his steadfast devotion to Christianity, St. Thallelaios was subjected to torture but remained faithful to his beliefs.

He eventually suffered martyrdom, and the Church later honored him as one of the early Christian saints who gave their lives for the faith.

Greek Name Day for Thallelaios

Because St. Thallelaios the Martyr is commemorated on May 20, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Thallelaios

Thallelaia

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday. Friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.
