St. Timothy Feast Day and Greek Name Day

St. Timothy is honored in the Orthodox Christian Church as an early Christian bishop and one of the closest disciples of the Apostle Paul. His feast day is celebrated on January 26, and on this day people named Timothy, Timotheos, Tim, and Timmy celebrate their Greek name day.

Who Was St. Timothy

St. Timothy was born in the first century in the city of Lystra, in Asia Minor. His mother was a Jewish Christian and his father was Greek. From a young age he was raised with strong religious teachings and became known for his faith and dedication.

He later became one of the most trusted companions of St. Paul the Apostle, traveling with him and assisting in spreading the message of Christianity throughout the Roman world.

Companion of the Apostle Paul

St. Timothy played an important role in the early Christian Church. He helped guide new Christian communities and supported the missionary work of St. Paul.

The New Testament includes two letters written by St. Paul to Timothy, known as First Timothy and Second Timothy, which provide guidance on church leadership and Christian living.

Greek Name Day for Timothy

Because St. Timothy is commemorated on January 26, this date is also the Greek name day for:

Timothy

Timotheos

Tim

Timmy

In Greek culture, celebrating a name day is often just as important as celebrating a birthday, and friends and family commonly offer well wishes or visits to honor the person whose name is being celebrated.

When Is St. Timothy Celebrated

The feast day of St. Timothy is observed each year on January 26 in the Greek Orthodox Church. His life is remembered for his dedication to spreading the Christian faith and for his close work with the Apostle Paul in the early Church.
