Ioannina and Zagori in Autumn: A Travel Guide

7 min read

When the summer crowds head home, northwestern Greece puts on its best show. Around Ioannina, the lakeside capital of Epirus, and in the stone villages of Zagori in the mountains above it, late October and November bring crisp mornings, oak forests and riverside plane trees turning gold and copper, and fireplaces lit in village guesthouses. For an autumn trip that feels local and unhurried, few places in Greece beat it.

This guide covers getting there, how long to stay, what to see in the city and the villages, hikes that suit shorter days, and what to eat. It works for a first trip to Greece, a long weekend from Athens or Thessaloniki, or a slow road trip through the mainland.

Our quick answer on whether Ioannina is worth visiting explains who loves it most. Before you pack, check typical conditions on our Ioannina in October and Ioannina in November weather pages. The city sits at around 500 metres above sea level and many Zagori villages are higher still, so it feels noticeably cooler than Athens or the coast.

Why go in late October and November

Autumn suits this corner of Greece well. The colors change week by week, the trails are quieter than in summer, and the food turns hearty. The official Vikos-Aoös Geopark lists April to November as the recommended season for its classic gorge crossing, so November is the tail end of the hiking window, not a closed season.

Ioannina is a lively university city all year, so hotels, cafes, and restaurants do not shut down when summer ends. The exception is the long weekend around 28 October, the Ochi Day national holiday, when many Greeks head to the mountains, so book early if your dates overlap.

Getting to Ioannina

The drive from Athens is roughly 410 to 420 km and usually takes about four to four and a half hours, crossing the Rio Antirrio bridge and following the Ionia Odos motorway north, with tolls along the way. Our Athens to Ioannina route guide lays out the driving, bus, and flight options side by side.

From the north, the Egnatia Odos motorway links Thessaloniki to Ioannina in about three hours. Domestic flights connect Athens with Ioannina's King Pyrrhus airport in about an hour. Intercity KTEL buses run to Ioannina from both cities, and local buses reach villages such as Monodendri and Papingo, but frequencies can be low outside summer.

Do you need a car?

For Zagori, a car makes life much easier. The villages are spread across several valleys and the best viewpoints sit at the end of mountain roads. Roads are paved but narrow and winding, so allow extra time and avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark. If you are new to Greek roads, read is it easy to drive in Greece first, and for the bigger transport picture see how to get around Greece.

Adding Corfu or Meteora

Ioannina also works as one stop in a longer trip. The port of Igoumenitsa is about an hour west on the Egnatia Odos, and ferries to Corfu run all year, with crossings of roughly 70 to 100 minutes. You can check sailings and book on GetGreece ferry tickets. Heading east instead, the monasteries of Meteora are under two hours away by road, and our Athens to Meteora route guide helps if you want to loop back to the capital that way.

How many days to plan

Two full days give you the city and a first taste of Zagori. Three or four days let you settle into a village, walk a proper trail, and see both the central and western villages without rushing. Our page on how many days to spend in Ioannina has more details.

Where to base yourself

Stay in Ioannina for restaurants, museums, and evening life on foot, or if you are traveling by bus. Stay in a Zagori village for quiet nights, a fireplace, and trailheads outside the door. Many travelers split the trip between the two. Some small village guesthouses close for part of the winter, so confirm before you go.

Ioannina: what to do in the city

The castle and the old town

The walled old town, known as the Kastro, sits on a rocky headland above the lake. Inside the walls you can wander lanes of old houses and climb to the Its Kale inner citadel, home to the Fethiye Mosque, the tomb of Ali Pasha, and the Byzantine Museum. The city's silversmithing tradition has its own museum in the castle grounds too. Hours switch between summer and winter schedules, so check before you go.

The island on Lake Pamvotis

Small boats leave from the Mavili Square area beside the castle for the island on Lake Pamvotis, a ride of about 10 minutes. It is the only inhabited lake island in Greece, with a car-free village, old monasteries, and tavernas by the water. The Monastery of Saint Panteleimon is where Ali Pasha was killed in 1822, and it now houses a museum about him and his era. Boats run less often in the evening outside summer, so ask the crew about the last return when you board.

The lakeside and the food scene

Back on the mainland, the tree-lined lakeside promenade is where the city comes to walk on sunny autumn afternoons, and the student crowd keeps cafes busy long after the tourists leave. For meals, start with our list of the top 10 restaurants in Ioannina, and read what Ioannina is known for for the bigger picture of its history and crafts.

Zagori: villages, bridges, and viewpoints

Zagori is a mountain area north of Ioannina with dozens of stone villages linked by cobbled paths, stairways, and arched bridges. In 2023, UNESCO added the Zagori Cultural Landscape to its World Heritage List, recognizing how the villages, paths, and bridges form one connected system, much of it funded by money that emigrants sent home in the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of the area also lies inside the North Pindus National Park.

Central Zagori: Monodendri, Kipi, and the bridges

Monodendri, on the rim of the Vikos Gorge, is the easiest first stop. A short paved path leads to the cliffside Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, and the nearby Oxya viewpoint gives one of the classic views down into the gorge. Lower down, around Kipi and Koukouli, are the stone bridges that people travel here to photograph, including the three-arched Kalogeriko bridge (also called the Plakidas bridge), built in 1814 and pictured at the top of this guide.

Western Zagori: Papingo and the rock pools

The twin villages of Megalo and Mikro Papingo sit beneath the cliffs of Mount Tymfi. Short walks lead to natural rock pools near the villages, and Papingo has a visitor information center for the geopark. In autumn the pools are for looking at, not swimming, but the walk is worth it.

The Beloi viewpoint and the Vradeto Steps

For a view of the gorge from the opposite side, drive up to Vradeto and walk out to the Beloi viewpoint. The Vradeto Steps, a zigzag stone staircase cut into the mountainside, link the village with Kapesovo below. The Geopark describes a 4 to 5 hour walking route that combines Kapesovo, the steps, and Beloi.

Hiking in autumn: what fits shorter days

The headline walk is the Vikos Gorge crossing from Monodendri to Vikos village. The Geopark puts it at about 10 km and 6 to 7 hours, with a single water source along the way, and proper hiking boots and clothing are a must. It ends in a different village, so arrange a taxi back to your car before you set off.

Plan around daylight

Daylight is the main autumn limit. Greece turns its clocks back one hour on Sunday 25 October 2026, and in early November the sun sets in Ioannina at around 5:30 pm, falling to about 5:15 pm by the end of the month. Start long hikes early, carry a headlamp, and tell your host your route. In an emergency, call 112.

Shorter walks

If a full day in the gorge is too much, mix shorter walks: Monodendri to Agia Paraskevi and back, the paths between the bridges around Kipi, or the stroll from Mikro Papingo to the rock pools. High routes, such as the climb toward the Drakolimni (dragon lake) of Tymfi, are serious mountain days and can see early snow in November. For a guided day out, browse our hiking tours in Greece, and if Zagori gives you a taste for quieter places, our guide to hidden gems in Greece has more ideas.

What to eat in Epirus in autumn

Epirus is famous for its pies (pites), with fillings of wild greens, cheese, leeks, or meat wrapped in thin pastry. Autumn menus lean on slow-cooked lamb and goat, bean dishes, and grilled meats. Around the lake you may also see old local specialties such as frog legs and eel, and Ioannina's sweet shops are known for syrup-soaked pastries.

On the way to or from Meteora, the mountain town of Metsovo is worth a stop for Metsovone, a smoked cheese with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in the EU. Do not be surprised if your host brings out homemade tsipouro at the end of a meal.

Weather and packing for late autumn

Expect a mix of bright, crisp days and spells of heavy rain. Epirus is one of the wettest parts of Greece, morning mist often hangs over the lake, and nights in the higher villages can get close to freezing in November.

Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, hiking boots with good grip for wet cobblestones, and a warm hat for the evenings. Our Greece weather in November guide compares regions across the country, and the best time to visit Greece explains how the seasons shift from the islands to the mountains.

Practical checklist

  • Book early if your dates include the 28 October long weekend.

  • Rent a car if you want to explore Zagori properly.

  • Start long hikes early: sunset is around 5:30 pm in early November.

  • Arrange your return transport before the Vikos Gorge crossing.

  • Check museum hours and the last boat back from the island.

  • Pack rain gear, warm layers, and boots with good grip.

  • Carry some cash for small village cafes and taxis.

A sample three-day autumn plan

Day 1: arrive in Ioannina, walk the castle and the old town, and take the boat to the island for a late lunch by the water.

Day 2: drive to central Zagori for Monodendri, Agia Paraskevi, and the Oxya viewpoint, then the stone bridges around Kipi. Sleep in a village guesthouse.

Day 3: walk part of the gorge or pick a shorter trail, then head to Papingo for the rock pools and the cliffs. Return to Ioannina, or continue west toward Igoumenitsa and Corfu or east toward Meteora. If you are watching costs, our page on whether Ioannina is expensive gives a feel for prices.
