What To Do in Paros Greece

More About Paros: History, Culture, & Hidden Gems

Paros is one of the most beloved islands in the Aegean Sea, known for its natural beauty, charming villages, and rich heritage. While many visitors come for the beaches and nightlife, there's so much more to discover. Here’s a deeper look at what makes Paros so special, and more ideas you can add to your itinerary.

Historical & Cultural Highlights

  • Parikia & the Panagia Ekatontapiliani (100-door church) - Parikia is the island’s main town and port, with whitewashed alleys, seaside promenades, and a classic Cycladic feel. A must-visit is the Church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of the oldest Christian pilgrimage sites in Greece, with parts dating to the 4th century. Its Byzantine mosaics, crypt, and elegant arches speak to centuries of religious significance.

  • The Archaeological Museum of Paros - Located in Parikia, this modest but fascinating museum houses artifacts unearthed across the island, ancient pottery, sculptures, coins, and inscriptions, that chronicle Paros’ role in antiquity and its maritime connections.

  • Lefkes Village & Marpissa - For a quieter, more traditional experience, head inland to Lefkes. This hilltop village was once the capital of Paros and retains stained-wood balconies, narrow lanes, and scenic viewpoints. Nearby Marpissa offers a slower pace, local tavernas, and a chance to wander off the tourist path.

  • The Ancient Quarry at Marathi - Paros marble was famous in antiquity (used for sculptures, columns, and monuments). Visiting the old quarries gives you a direct connection to that legacy. You can see the marks left behind by ancient stonecutters and walk among massive, unfinished blocks.

Nature & Outdoor Activities

  • Beaches & Watersports - Paros offers a wide variety of beaches: from the calm, family-friendly Kolymbithres with its sculpted granite rocks, to the wind-swept Golden Beach (Chrissi Akti), ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Don’t miss Piperi Beach or Santa Maria for snorkeling and relaxed vibes.

  • Hiking & Hiking TrailsThe island has some rewarding walking routes. One popular path leads from Lefkes down through olive groves and terraced fields toward the seaside village of Prodromos. Trails also link inland hamlets, offering panoramic views over hills, sea, and coastline.

  • Sunset & Viewpoints - For a memorable sunset, try the walk up to Prophet Elias chapel near Parikia, or from the ridge behind Lefkes. These vantage points offer sweeping views across the Aegean and the neighboring islands.

  • Island Hopping & Day TripsParos is well placed to visit nearby islands like Antiparos (a quick boat ride away), or even small islets like Despotiko for ruins and quiet beaches. This gives a chance for off-the-beaten-path exploration.

Local Life & Gastronomy

  • Local Markets & ShopsIn Parikia’s central square and lanes, you’ll find shops selling Parian marble souvenirs, handmade jewelry, art pieces, olive oil, and local products like honey, cheese (like mizithra), and small-batch wines.

  • Taverna Culture & NightlifeIn smaller villages such as Naoussa and Pounda, traditional tavernas serve fresh seafood, grilled fish, and Cycladic specialties. After dinner, enjoy slowness: wandering the harbor, sipping ouzo or chilled wine, catching live music.

  • Festivals & Cultural EventsParos hosts music festivals, religious feast days, and local celebrations throughout summer, great opportunities to see the community in full swing, with traditional dance, food, and open-air concerts.
