How Many Days Should I Spend in Thessaloniki?

Thessaloniki gives back more the longer you stay, and three to four full days gives enough room to actually settle into the place rather than rush through a checklist.

Thessaloniki splits naturally into a couple of focused days. One day covers the waterfront and the White Tower, then climbs into Ano Poli, the old upper town, for Ottoman-era houses, city walls, and views back down over the Thermaic Gulf. A second day works well for the layered history closer to the center: the Rotunda, Roman-era ruins scattered through downtown streets, and the Byzantine churches that earned the city a spot on UNESCO's list.

Food alone justifies a slower pace here. Thessaloniki's status as Greece's first UNESCO City of Gastronomy means a single day of eating barely scratches the surface, and mornings are well spent at Kapani and Modiano markets before an evening in Ladadika, the old warehouse district turned bar and taverna strip near the port.

A boat cruise along the waterfront gives a different angle on the city skyline, and a guided walk through its layered history helps connect the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman pieces properly. Anyone with extra time should also build in a day trip to Meteora or the beaches and peninsulas of Chalkidiki, both reachable within a few hours by car.

Three days covers the city center comfortably, four lets the markets, neighborhoods, and history spread out without feeling rushed, and five or more makes room for a proper day trip beyond the city limits. Even a single well-planned day gives a real sense of Thessaloniki's character, but the city has enough layered history and food culture to fill a stay several times that length.
