How Many Days Should I Spend on Anafi?

Anafi asks for three to five days, enough to hike the Kalamos monolith, work through its beaches, and settle into Chora's own pace.

Anafi covers well over a first day in Chora and its nearest beaches. The capital sits at 200 meters, built into the mountainside with narrow alleys, caves, and footpaths that give real views over the Aegean, and Klisidi and Agios Nikolaos, both near the port, offer easy swimming close to town for a first afternoon in the water.

A second day suits Roukounas, a stretch of golden sand running for over a kilometer along the island's south coast, with enough room to spread out even in peak August. The coastal trail connecting Klisidi to Roukounas by way of Katsouni and Megalos Potamos takes three to four hours and lets a single day cover several beaches rather than just one.

A third day belongs to the island's real landmark: the hike up the 460 meter Kalamos monolith to the Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa, passing the ruins of an ancient Apollo sanctuary along the way. The round trip runs four to five hours and demands proper shoes and good weather, but the views from the summit stretch across the Cyclades chain toward Santorini, Ios, and on clear days, Crete.

A fourth or fifth day works well for slowing down further, since Anafi's small size and limited crowds make repeat visits to a favorite beach or a kayak trip to Rina Cave a natural way to fill extra time. Most travelers connect through Santorini by a short ferry or arrive directly from Piraeus on a longer crossing.

Two days cover Chora and the closest beaches comfortably, three adds Roukounas and the coastal trail, and four or five brings the Kalamos hike and a slower pace into the trip properly. Even a short two-day stay leaves a real sense of the island's quiet, but Anafi's hike and beaches give genuine reason to stay well past that.
