How Many Days Should I Spend on Psara?

Psara covers well over two days for the village and its history, and three lets a boat trip to Antipsara settle in without feeling rushed.

Psara fills a first day easily around the village, the island's only settlement, facing the southern bay beneath the hill that gives it a distinctive setting. Mavri Rachi, the black ridge where the last defenders made their stand during the 1824 destruction of the island, sits within walking distance and holds a monument commemorating the event still marked each year on June 24th.

A second day belongs to the Monastery of the Dormition, where around 20 nuns still live and maintain a small library, along with the Church of Agios Nikolaos on the hill behind the village, giving a wide view over the surrounding sea. Lakka beach, close to the village, offers an easy swim once the history-focused morning winds down.

A third day suits a boat trip to Antipsara, an islet just three kilometers away holding Psili Ammos, a long stretch of golden sand with emerald water protected under the Natura 2000 program for its role sheltering birds, fish, and other marine life.

Psara has no airport, and travelers connect through Chios, either by a short ferry crossing of about 20 minutes or through longer direct sailings from Piraeus.
