How Many Days Should I Spend on Skyros?

Skyros covers well over two days for Chora and its closest beaches, and four to five let the island's north and south, along with a boat trip offshore, come together at a proper pace.

Skyros fills a first day easily in Chora, built on a slope beneath a Byzantine castle, where narrow lanes lead to the main square and traditional bakeries selling amigdalota, sweet almond biscuits worth buying before leaving. Magazia and Molos, the two organized beaches closest to town, give an easy first swim.

A second day belongs to the Castle of Skyros, giving panoramic views over the island, along with the Monastery of Agios Georgios, known for its frescoes and quiet grounds. Kira Panagia and Agalipa, both quieter beaches reachable by boat or a moderately difficult trail, round out an afternoon spent away from the busier stretches near town.

A third day suits Mouries Farm, home to the island's rare Skyrian ponies, thought to descend from horses depicted on the Parthenon frieze, paired with a meal at the farm's own restaurant, which locals and repeat visitors often single out as one of the island's best.

A fourth day works well for a boat trip to Sarakino, an islet south of Skyros known for turquoise water and a sea cave, typically departing from Peukos beach for a full day on the water.

A fifth day suits Atsitsa, on the greener, pine-forested north side, best timed for sunset, along with the rugged southern half of the island, where the poet Rupert Brooke is buried in an olive grove near Treis Boukes Bay.

Two days cover Chora and the closest beaches comfortably, four brings the castle, the pony farm, and a boat trip to Sarakino into the trip properly, and five lets both the northern and southern halves of the island round things out fully. Even a short two-day visit gives a real sense of the island's character, but Skyros's ponies, ruins, and quieter coves give clear reason to stay for the better part of a week.
