Is Alonissos Good for Families?

Alonissos keeps its family beaches sandy and gently sloping, and its position inside Europe's largest marine park gives kids a real chance to spot dolphins or a monk seal along the way. Yes, it works well for families.

Alonissos's Chrisi Milia and Megalos Mourtias give the clearest family picks, both with fine sand, a sloping seabed, and the facilities needed for an easy day at the water. Glyfa and Tsoukalia rank among the island's best snorkeling spots, with water clarity regularly exceeding 30 meters, and older kids willing to swim a bit further tend to spot octopus, moray eels, and colorful schools of fish without much effort.

The National Marine Park itself, established in 1992 as Greece's first, gives families a real reason to book a boat trip together, since dolphins turn up regularly and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, while never guaranteed, does live in these waters. Uninhabited islands within the park, including Peristera, add an easy picnic stop for kids wanting a bit of adventure.

Patitiri, the modern port town, handles most of the practical side of a visit, with rental shops, dive centers, and boat trips departing right from the harbor, while Chora, the old capital perched on cliffs above, gives families a different pace entirely after the earthquake split the island's two centers apart in 1965. Several resorts, including Marpunta near the marine park, run activity programs geared toward kids and teens specifically.

Cooking classes with local families let kids learn to make cheese pie or fish soup using traditional methods, and kid-friendly scuba and snorkeling lessons give families a structured way to get comfortable in the water together before venturing out on their own.

Alonissos suits families wanting calm, protected beaches, real marine wildlife, and a slower island pace, connecting easily by ferry through Skiathos or Skopelos for anyone extending the trip.
