Is Chios Expensive?

Chios runs cheaper than Lesvos, its closest comparison island, and the gap comes down largely to how much lighter Chios's tourist traffic stays overall, keeping accommodation and dining priced closer to what residents pay than what a busier destination might charge.

Chios offers real value in accommodation, since staying here consistently costs less than a comparable room on Lesvos, and the island's under-touristed reputation means prices haven't climbed the way they have on more heavily marketed North Aegean neighbors. Markets throughout the island sell fresh produce and local specialties at reasonable prices, and shopping there rather than at tourist-facing shops near the main squares stretches a food budget further.

Getting around costs relatively little, since public buses run reliably and affordably across the island, though they can crowd during peak season, and renting a car or scooter gives more flexibility for reaching the mastic villages in the south, including Pyrgi and Mesta, without much added expense.

Chios shares real overlap with Lesvos in terms of overall character, both islands offering a version of Greek travel that skews less toward international crowds than the Cyclades, but Chios specifically draws travelers interested in mastiha, the resin unique to the island's southern villages, and tastings or workshops tied to that tradition add a modest, worthwhile expense to a visit.

Chios National Airport connects directly to Athens, Thessaloniki, and several other islands, and comparing flight costs against a ferry from Piraeus, or from neighboring islands like Lesvos, Samos, or Ikaria, helps determine the more affordable route depending on the season.

Chios suits budget-conscious travelers wanting real medieval villages and a distinct food culture without heavy costs, and Chios's cost of living stays reasonable overall for anyone weighing accommodation, food, and transport before booking, connecting easily to Lesvos, Oinousses, or Psara for anyone extending the trip.
