Is Dokos Expensive?

Dokos costs vary entirely by how you choose to experience it, since the island itself has no economy at all, no shops, no accommodation, nothing to spend money on beyond whatever gets you there and back.

Dokos reaches travelers only by private boat, water taxi, or organized excursion, since there's no ferry service and no way to walk in. A private water taxi from Hydra runs as a real, fixed expense, and sharing the ride with other travelers heading the same direction helps bring that cost down considerably. Organized family or group boat tours combining Dokos with Hydra or Spetses for a full day out give a more moderate alternative to chartering a private boat outright, and these tours typically include snorkeling gear, refreshments, and a crew, folding several costs into one price rather than arranging each separately.

Once on the island, everything costs nothing, since there's no fuel, water, or food for sale anywhere on Dokos, and visitors need to bring their own supplies for the entire day. Hiking to the ancient ruins, swimming over the site of the world's oldest known shipwreck, or simply anchoring in Skintos Bay all require nothing beyond having gotten there in the first place.

Sailors and experienced campers can stay overnight aboard their own boat at little added cost beyond what a night at anchor typically involves, while everyone else needs to base in Hydra, Spetses, or Ermioni and treat Dokos as a day excursion from there.

Dokos suits travelers willing to budget for the boat itself rather than the destination, since the island's complete lack of infrastructure means the entire cost of a visit comes down to how you arrange getting there.
