Is Dokos Good for Families?

Dokos works well for families as a day on the water rather than a place to stay, and organized family boat trips built specifically around it back that up. Yes, it works well for families, particularly as part of a sailing day rather than an overnight base.

Dokos's Skintos Bay, the island's only real harbor, gives the calmest, most protected water on the island, sheltered from wind on nearly every side and shallow enough near shore that kids can swim and use snorkeling gear or sea toys without much concern. Family sailing trips out of Hydra or Spetses regularly include Dokos as a stop specifically because of how safe and calm the anchorage stays, often pairing a swim there with lunch and paddleboarding.

For older kids, the waters off Dokos hold the remains of what's considered the oldest known shipwreck in the world, giving snorkeling a real story attached to it rather than just clear water to look at. The prehistoric settlement ruins scattered across the island's interior give families a short, easy hike with something genuinely old to find at the end of it, and the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos sits right on the beach for anyone wanting a quiet stop between swims.

Since Dokos has no shops, restaurants, or reliable fresh water, families visiting need to bring everything for the day, and most trips run four to six hours, enough time to swim, hike to the ruins, and enjoy the isolation without needing to plan for an overnight stay. Staying the night only really works for families arriving by sailboat or experienced campers comfortable with total self-sufficiency.

Dokos suits families looking for a real, uncrowded swim stop with a bit of history attached, best experienced as part of a boat day out of Hydra, Spetses, or the Ermioni coast rather than a standalone destination to book a room in.
