Is Ithaca Expensive?
Ithaca stays reasonably priced overall, and the effort it takes to actually reach the island, no airport and only ferry connections, has kept it from developing the resort infrastructure that drives up costs on busier Ionian and Cyclades islands.
Ithaca has remained largely a sailing destination rather than a mass tourism one, and that character shows up directly in pricing, since the island never built the kind of large hotel chains found on Mykonos or even neighboring Corfu. Accommodation stays limited but affordable, with budget guesthouses and self-catering apartments giving real value across Vathy, Stavros, and Kioni.
Dining follows a real split depending on setting: harbor-view restaurants in Kioni charge a premium for the setting, while simple tavernas in Vathy, the kind where locals actually eat, serve dishes like bourdeto and sofrito at fair prices without much markup. The island's wildflower honey, sold in local shops, costs considerably less bought here than the same product would in Athens, making it a real worthwhile souvenir rather than an overpriced one.
Reaching Ithaca costs a real line item worth planning for, since travelers typically connect through Kefalonia or take a longer ferry route from Patras, and booking ferry tickets in advance during summer helps avoid both higher last-minute fares and the risk of a sold-out crossing.
Beyond transport, most of what fills a day here costs little, since hiking to the Cave of the Nymphs, walking Vathy's horseshoe harbor, or swimming at Gidaki Beach, reachable by boat or a real hike, requires no entrance fee.
Ithaca suits budget-conscious travelers wanting a real sailing-island atmosphere without heavy tourist pricing, connecting easily through Kefalonia for anyone building a longer Ionian itinerary.
