Is Kavala Worth Visiting?

Kavala layers Byzantine and Ottoman history into a hillside above the Aegean, with a fortress, an aqueduct, and the birthplace of modern Egypt's founder all packed into one walkable old town.

Kavala's old town, the Panagia peninsula, holds centuries of history in a few blocks. A 15th century fortress sits at the top with clear views over the port, and the Kamares aqueduct, a stone structure over four miles long, still frames photos across the city below. The Imaret, built in 1817 by Muhammad Ali Pasha, founder of modern Egypt and a Kavala native, stands as one of the finer examples of Ottoman architecture left in Greece, and his childhood home nearby is open to visit.

Tobacco built the city's wealth from the mid-19th century until the 1950s, when Kavala was the largest tobacco processing center in the Balkans, and the Tobacco Museum along with the old warehouses around Kapnergati Square still trace that history. The harbor itself is lined with seafood restaurants working straight off the day's catch.

The ancient site of Philippi, a UNESCO World Heritage listing about 25 minutes away, holds the theater and basilicas where the apostle Paul preached his first sermon in Europe. A short ferry from nearby Keramoti crosses to Thassos in under an hour, adding an island stop to a Kavala stay, and the Nestos river wetlands and Mount Paggeo add real hiking options nearby.

Kavala suits travelers who want history, good food, and easy access to an island all in one place, with several days of its own history and coastline to work through before any island time comes into play.
