Is Skyros Good for Families?

Skyros keeps most of its beaches sandy and its rare ponies close enough for kids to visit on an easy farm trip, and the island's manageable size makes it easy to drive around as a family. Yes, it works well for families.

Skyros's Magazia and Molos, connected by an 800 meter stretch of sand just north of Chora, give the clearest family pick, with watersports options and enough space that families rarely struggle to find a spot. Tsoukalia, named after the ancient wine-pots once produced on the island, holds clear water and a seabed scattered with old ceramic pieces, turning a simple snorkel into a real hunt for kids with a mask.

Mouries Farm, close to Skyros Town, gives families a close look at the endangered Skyrian pony, a small breed found nowhere else and possibly tied to the horses used by Alexander the Great's army. Short rides suit first-time riders, and longer guided treks work well for kids already comfortable in the saddle. A taverna sits right next to the farm for an easy lunch stop afterward.

Chora itself, built up a hillside beneath a monastery and the remains of a Venetian castle, stays walkable enough for families to explore its whitewashed alleys on foot, and local workshops still practice ceramics, embroidery, and woodcarving that kids can watch in progress. Hiking trails cut through both the rocky south and the pine-forested west, giving families a choice of terrain depending on how far kids can walk.

Skyros has no direct ferry from Piraeus, so travelers connect through Kymi on Evia, a crossing of about two and a half hours, or fly in from Athens in around 50 minutes.

Skyros suits families wanting sandy beaches, a real connection to the island's ponies and crafts, and a slower pace than its busier Sporades neighbors, with ground-floor apartments and yards making it especially manageable for families traveling with younger kids.
