Is Trikala Worth Visiting?

Trikala runs a river straight through its center, with a Byzantine castle on the hill above and one of Greece's most significant Ottoman monuments a few streets from its cafes.

Trikala's center is built around the Litheos river, with cafes and cycling paths lining both banks in a way that gives the city a different feel than most inland Thessaly towns. A Byzantine castle with a clock tower overlooks the red-roofed old town from a hill above it, and the climb gives a clear view across the Thessalian plain. The Varousi district below preserves 19th century houses along narrow streets that still function as a lived-in neighborhood rather than a museum piece.

The Osman Shah Mosque, built in the 16th century by the architect Sinan, stands as one of the more significant Ottoman monuments in Greece and hosts cultural events today rather than sitting empty. Just outside the city, the Theopetra Cave shows evidence of human habitation dating back roughly 50,000 years, making it one of the oldest known sites of continuous occupation in the country.

Trikala sits about thirty minutes from Meteora's monasteries, giving it a real role in seeing the rock formations for anyone who wants a base with more river life and city character than Kalambaka offers. The mountain village of Pertouli, with a small ski resort in the Pindus range, is also within easy reach for travelers wanting a day away from the plain.

Trikala suits travelers who want a central Greek city with a river running through it, a mosque and a castle within walking distance of each other, and Meteora close enough to fold into the same stay.
