What Is Dokos Known For?

Dokos holds the oldest known shipwreck anywhere in the world, a discovery that pushed the record of underwater archaeology back by roughly 4,200 years.

Dokos is known first for that wreck, found in Skintos Bay by American underwater archaeologist Peter Throckmorton on August 23, 1975. The site, resting between 15 and 30 meters below the surface, dates to the second Early Helladic period, roughly 2700 to 2200 BC, and while the ship's wooden hull dissolved centuries ago, its cargo survived remarkably intact: more than 500 ceramic vessels, including sauceboats, kitchenware, and urns. Between 1989 and 1992, the Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology, led by George Papathanasopoulos, carried out Greece's first full-scale systematic excavation of an ancient shipwreck at the site. Evidence suggests the ship was likely a merchant vessel carrying pottery from the Cyclades, possibly bound for coastal trade around the Argolic Gulf, before running aground while trying to enter the bay.

Dokos is also known by its ancient name, Aperopia, and the island held real strategic value in antiquity given its position along maritime routes connecting the Argolic Gulf to the coast near Laconia. Archaeological evidence points to sparse habitation as far back as the Neolithic period, and the island's sheltered bay continued serving as a safe anchorage for centuries afterward, including during the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

Today Dokos remains uninhabited, without roads, electricity, or any permanent settlement, and its main connection to the modern world runs through boat trips and sailing routes out of nearby Hydra and Spetses, both close enough to reach the island's waters within an easy crossing.
