What Is Lesvos Known For?

Lesvos holds one of the largest petrified forests anywhere on earth, an entire subtropical ecosystem frozen in stone roughly 20 million years before humans ever set foot on the island.

Lesvos is known first for that petrified forest, formed between 17 and 20 million years ago when repeated volcanic eruptions buried a subtropical forest under layers of ash and pyroclastic flows. Heavy rainfall that followed triggered mudflows that preserved entire trees standing upright in their original growing position, with some trunks stretching up to 20 meters long and root systems extending 7 meters into the ground. The fossilized remains include not just trunks but branches, fruits, and leaves, giving scientists an unusually complete record of what the region's ecosystem looked like during the Miocene period. The site holds both the thickest standing petrified tree trunk in the world, measuring 13.7 meters around, and the tallest surviving petrified trunk anywhere in Europe.

The forest earned protected status from the Greek government in 1985, and it now ranks as a founding member of both the European Geoparks Network and UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network, spread across four separate visitable park sites alongside the Natural History Museum in the village of Sigri. Beyond the trees themselves, Lesvos has yielded other significant fossil finds, including remains identified as the oldest known land mammal discovered anywhere in Greece, dating back roughly 19 million years.

Lesvos also carries real literary weight as the birthplace of several major figures from antiquity, including the philosopher Theophrastus, the poet Alkaios, the statesman Pittacus, and the musician Terpandros, connecting the island's ancient intellectual legacy to its geological one and to nearby Chios across the eastern Aegean.
